(2011) dir Ed Gass-Donnelly, w/Peter Stormare, Jill Hennessy, Martha Plimpton [76 min +discussion]

SMALL TOWN MURDER SONGS is a modern gothic tale of crime and redemption and features one of the best performances of the year from character actor Peter Stormare (Fargo, Big Lebowski) in a rare starring role.

When a young, unidentified woman is found dead by the lake – the victim of a brutal and violent crime – Walter, an aging small town police officer (Peter Stormare), is called to the scene of the town’s first murder investigation in decades. Haunted by his past, and hampered by the mistrust of the community and a state police officer overseeing the investigation, he sets out to solve the murder, complicated by his ex-lover (Hennessy) and his suspicion of her current boyfriend. As he delves deeper into the crime, his newly-reformed life begins to unravel threatening his relationship with Sam (Plimpton) and intertwining itself within the investigation and possibly the murder itself.

“NEW YORK TIMES CRITICS’ PICK, ‘SMALL TOWN MURDER SONGS’ IS COMPELLINGLY ACTED FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. BENEATH A DECEPTIVE CALM, IT UNCOVERS A CORE OF FEAR AND LOATHING AS OMINOUS AS THE BACKWOODS WORLD OF ‘WINTER’S BONE’” – THE NEW YORK TIMES

“5 STARS. SLOW BURNING MASTERPIECE. THE RESULT IS FLABBERGASTING-DISARMING, AND DOWNRIGHT FRIGHTENING. SMALL TOWN MURDER SONGS IS THE MUST SEE- SOON-TO-BE-CULT PHENOMENON OF THE 21ST CENTURY. SEE IT FOR YOUR OWN GOOD. YOU WON’T BE SORRY.” –FILMTHREAT

“A GEM. DEFINITELY A WINNER” –AIN’T IT COOL NEWS

“4 STARS… SEETHING THRILLER… ECHOES THE WORKS OF THE COEN BROTHERS… STUNNING… SPECTACULAR… EERIE… CHILLING… AN EXTREMELY UNIQUE PIECE OF CINEMA.” –EXAMINER.COM
