Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Buy Tickets

Single Feature; Brattle Passes Accepted. Also plays Saturday, March 23. Plays in place of THE WIZARD OF OZ.

(1971) dir Mel Stuart w/Gene Wilder, Peter Ostrum, Jack Albertson [100 min]
This psychedelic musical about Charlie (Ostrum) and his visit to a mysterious chocolate factory is proof that yes, sometimes the movie is better than the book. Adapted from Roald Dahl’s classic children’s story, Gene Wilder stars as the titular Wonka in the role he was born to play. Charlie, his Grandpa Joe and four spoiled brats win a trip to the Candyland of their dreams, but as each misbehaving child receives his comeuppance, Charlie begins to wonder if Willy Wonka is as benevolent as he seems. The genius of WILLY WONKA is director Mel Stuart’s willingness to let Dahl’s wicked sense of humor coexist with a heartfelt children’s movie.
