(1936) dir Archie Mayo w/Bogart, Leslie Howard, Bette Davis, Genevieve Tobin [83 min; 35mm]
Here’s a rarely shown Bogie gem that hasn’t been screened at the Brattle since 1997. Though still not considered a leading man, Bogart’s undeniable charisma shines through in the role of Duke Mantee, a ruthless bank robber based on John Dillinger. On the run with his gang, Mantee takes the denizens of an isolated diner hostage while awaiting the arrival of his girl – or a showdown with the police, whichever comes first.
