Heaven’s Story

Director Takahisa Zeze in Person!

Free Screening!

Heaven’s Story / Hevunzu sutôrî / ヘヴンズ ストーリー
(2010) dir Takahisa Zeze w/Moeki Tsuruoka, Tomoharu Hasegawa [278 min; 35mm]

Eight-year old Sato swears revenge against the man that slaughtered her family – yet he has already committed suicide. On TV she learns of a young father who swears to track down and execute the teenager that killed his wife and daughter. Eight years later she visits him and together they embark on a harrowing hunt that forces them to face their very idea of humanity. HEAVEN’S STORY switches between a merciless depiction of the aftereffects of violence, a poetic investigation of intertwined lives, and surreal scenes of beauty reminiscent of traditional Japanese masked theater.

Presented by the Film Study Center, the Sensory Ethnography Lab, and the Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard University.
