(2013) dir Sini Anderson w/Kathleen Hanna, Adam Horovitz, Joan Jett [80 min]
Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of the punk band Bikini Kill and dance-punk trio Le Tigre, rose to national attention as the reluctant but never shy voice of the riot grrrl movement. She became one of the most famously outspoken contemporary feminist icons, and a cultural lightning rod. Her critics wished she would just shut-up, and her fans hoped she never would. So in 2005, when Hanna stopped shouting and mysteriously gave up performing, many wondered why. Through 20 years of archival footage and intimate interviews with Hanna, filmmaker Sini Anderson uncovers why this seemingly unstoppable woman suddenly withdrew from the limelight. THE PUNK SINGER takes viewers on a fascinating tour of contemporary music and offers a never-before-seen view into the life of this fearless punk icon. More Info: Facebook | Twitter | YouTube

Reviews:

“Unnegotiated truth, a frank and exhilarating portrayal of a legend.” – Meredith Borders, Badass Digest

“The Punk Singer is a perfect storm. It is a love letter to Kathleen Hanna, to feminism, and to the fans, but it’s also just a damn good movie.” – Jenni Miller, Film.com

“It’s impossible to watch The Punk Singer and not ask if feminism is dead. That’s a fair starting question. But a better one is what if it isn’t — what if we’ve just stopped recognizing it?” – Amy Nicholson, Village Voice

“This is a woman who has been through hell and come out kicking, and the result is as much a celebration of her life as it is a documentary.” – Tom Huddleston, Time Out London
