AHÍ VA EL DIABLO (2012) dir Adrián García Bogliano w/Francisco Barreiro, Laura Caro, Alan Martinez, Michele Garcia [97 min; Spanish with English subtitles]
A couple’s preteen son and daughter inexplicably reappear after being lost overnight on a desolate, cave-riddled mountainside. Becoming withdrawn and beginning to exhibit strange behavior, their parents quickly assume something sinister happened to them while missing and alone. They target a creepy peeping tom as the culprit and the husband pursues this practical horror. But, after hearing an ominous local legend, the concerned mother begins to realize that their children may have fallen prey to something inhuman – and that this dark, unstoppable evil has now returned home with them.

A strange and unsettling work that, oddly, benefits from an unevenness of tone – at one moment cerebral and gothic, at another lurid and gore-fueled. Bogliano keeps us off balance with a bold confluence of styles and delivers a film that – at its most effective – evokes Dario Argento re-imagining Picnic at Hanging Rock. Not to be missed by connoisseurs of international horror cinema.

“A marvelously macabre tale of terror. The movie just oozes with lapsed Catholicism, illicit sexuality and supernatural menace.” —Dennis Dermody, Paper

“One of the most interesting, frightening and thoroughly alive—both intellectually and viscerally—works of horror and dread this critic has seen in a very, very long time.” —Gabe Toro, The Playlist on Indiewire

“Incredibly entertaining. It’s got a little bit of everything for the hardcore horror nut.” —Bloody Disgusting

“Magnificently creepy. It utterly floored me.” —Steve Prokopy, Ain’t It Cool News

“An exercise in escalating dread that continuously defies the seasoned horror fan’s expectations.” —Matt Barone, Complex

★★★★ “Possessed by the spirit of ’70s psychological horror.” —Time Out NY
