(Some of) The Best of 2013Repertory Series Archive

Special introduction by Boston Online Film Critics Association member Monica Castillo at 7:30!

(2012) dir Haifaa Al-Mansour w/Waad Mohammed, Reem Abdullah [98 min; 35mm]
WADJDA is a 10-year-old girl living in a suburb of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Although she lives in a conservative world, Wadjda is fun loving, entrepreneurial and always pushing the boundaries of what she can get away with. When she spots a beautiful green bicycle for sale – one that might give her the upper hand in a dispute with her friend Abdullah – Wadjda decides she must have it. But Wadjda’s mother won’t allow it, fearing repercussions from a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl’s virtue. So Wadjda decides to try and raise the money herself.

“In a society that values the community over the individual, the theme of anonymity can be perceived as an easy route for a filmmaker, however Al-Mansour infuses a creative perspective to this theme by confidently utilizing the power of visual communication.” Deana DiSalvio writes about WADJDA in her latest Brattle Film Note.
