Author Margaret Atwood in Person!

(1990) dir Volker Schlöndorff w/Natasha Richardson, Faye Dunaway, Aiden Quinn, Elizabeth McGovern, Robert Duvall [109 min; 35mm]

We are thrilled to welcome the recipient of this year’s Harvard Arts Medal, Margaret Atwood, to the Brattle to introduce this special screening. THE HANDMAID’S TALE is a dark, disturbing work of speculative fiction that took the world by storm when it was published in 1985. The novel describes a near-future United States where women have been stripped of all rights and exist only to serve the militaristic male dominated society. In Volker Schlöndorff’s film adaptation, Natasha Richardson plays Offred, a “handmaid” whose only function is to procreate with the elite of the new society.
