Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

(1984) dir Hayao Miyazaki [117 min; 35mm; in Japanese w/English subtitles]
Hayao Miyazaki’s first masterpiece has all the elements he would continue to explore in later work: part epic adventure, part environmentalist call to action, and with a brave heroine at its core. In the far future after a nuclear war has destroyed the Earth, small communities fight against each other as they struggle to survive on the now hostile planet. When mysterious creatures invade her beloved Valley of the Wind, Princess Nausicaä sets out to understand these processes of nature, leading her into terrible danger, sacrifice, and eventual triumph.

“Nausicaä is the standard to which all other Miyazaki heroines aspire.”

Tessa Mediano’s essay “Birth of a Vision” appears on the Brattle Film Notes blog. Read More
