(2012) dir Bernardo Bertolucci w/Jacopo Olmo Antinori, Tea Falco, Sonia Bergamasco, Veronica Lazar [101 min; DCP]
Any new film from a cinematic master like Bernardo Bertolucci (The Conformist, Last Tango in Paris) is a cause for celebration – that it is his first in a decade makes the occasion even more special. In ME AND YOU, the veteran director focuses on a pair of lonely siblings who find unexpected solace in each other’s presence. Lorenzo (Antinori) is a pimply-faced, awkward but intelligent fourteen year old who, rather than go on a ski trip with his classmates, opts to hole up in a storage space in his mother’s apartment building. Unbeknownst to Lorenzo, his wild-child half-sister Olivia (Falco) has also set her sights on the same space for her own reasons. Thrust together in this small space, the pair – though first full of resentment – develop a quick bond that could possibly change their lives. An intimate chamber piece that makes ingenious use of its cramped setting, ME AND YOU may not rise to the level of Bertolucci’s past masterpieces, but it remains an excellent film that proves that this octogenarian director still has something to say.

“The film’s a treat to watch, with luxuriant camerawork by Fabio Cianchetti and a gorgeous, intimate score by Franco Piersanti.” –Ty Burr, Boston Globe

NYT Critics’ Pick “Lorenzo, the bratty 14-year-old protagonist of Bernardo Bertolucci’s “Me and You,” is the quintessence of flailing adolescent angst.” –Stephen Holden, New York Times

“Me and You has the reflection and patience of age, and the fleet-footed energy of youth.” –Bilge Ebiri, New York Magazine
