(1972) dir Francis Ford Coppola w/Marlon Brando, Al Pacino [175 min; DCP]
Francis Ford Coppola’s THE GODFATHER is one of the best genre films of all time. Mario Puzo wrote both the original novel and the screenplay, and this consistency of narrative helps the film to stand as a milestone in the depiction of the Italian mafia. If you haven’t seen this film, Al Pacino plays Michael Corleone, the son of Don Vito Corleone (magnificently played by Marlon Brando) who has returned from WWII to see the wedding of his sister. However much Michael may want to stay out of the family business, his filial piety thrusts him into the heart of a gathering gang-war and his role as the natural successor of the aging Don.
