Repertory Series ArchiveThe Prince of Darkness: A Tribute to Gordon Willis

The Godfather, Part II

Buy Tickets

(1974) dir Francis Ford Coppola w/Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall [200 min; DCP]
This is one of the best sequels ever made, in any genre. After the Academy missed the boat on the original, they came to their senses in 1974 and gave Coppola a much-deserved Best Director Oscar (along with 5 other nods including Best Picture). Far starker in tone and more socially complex in its plot, THE GODFATHER, PART II presents two parallel storylines. One involves Mafia chief Michael Corleone after the events of the first movie, the other is a series of flashbacks following his father, Vito Corleone from his youth in Sicily at the turn of the century to the founding of the Corleone family in New York. Michael must consider his priorities as he is confronted with family betrayal, the expansion and consolidation of his power, and Castro’s Cuban revolution.
