(1997) dir Gus van Sant w/Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Minnie Driver, Ben Affleck, Stellan Skarsgard [126 min; DCP]
Will Hunting (Damon) is a 20-year-old custodian at MIT who also happens to be an unrealized math genius with a volatile temper. In a bid to avoid jail time after a fight, Will is assigned to therapy, which he chafes at until he meets Dr. Sean Maguire (Williams), a therapist who needs as much help in dealing with past pain as Will does. After a string of critically lauded and popular performances in both comedies and dramas, Robin Williams finally got an Oscar for his supporting performance in this now-classic Boston film.

“Important as legacy and the ‘carpe diem’ mantra may be, though, there is another ideal that Professor Keating, Dr. McGuire, and Robin Williams himself all preached: that of passion, of fervor and devotion. Of love.” Matt Hannigan looks at Robin Williams’ roles in Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting in his essay for Brattle Film Notes. Read More
