(2013) dir Terry Gilliam w/Christoph Waltz, Melanie Thierry, David Thewlis, Lucas Hedges, Matt Damon, Tilda Swinton [107 min; DCP]

Watch Trailer

The newest film from visionary filmmaker Terry Gilliam, THE ZERO THEOREM stars Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) as Qohen Leth, an eccentric computer genius plagued with existential angst. He lives in isolation in a burnt-out chapel, waiting for a phone call which he is convinced will provide him with answers he has long sought.

Ignoring the warnings of his manager (Thewlis), Qohen jumps at the chance to work on a mysterious project because it will allow him to work from home close to his phone. As he comes closer to completing his assignment – attempting to prove there is no meaning in the Universe – Qohen becomes increasingly unhinged and is only brought down to earth by visits from the flirtatious Bainsley (Thierry) and the petulant Bob (Hedges), a teenage computer genius. Unfortunately, finding love and friendship only makes his job that much more difficult – and his possible success that much more painful.

“The culture’s caught up to Gilliam. Everybody’s doing Orwell now. But Gilliam’s appropriation feels both aptly skeptical and unfashionably utopian.” – Wesley Morris, Grantland

“A perfect complete masterpiece… Terry Gilliam’s greatest work since BRAZIL.” – Harry Knowles, Ain’t It Cool News

“Gilliam still has the cartoonist’s imagination from his Monty Python days, and social rage expressed not in a frown but a giggle. THE ZERO THEOREM is a spectacle that demands to be cherished.” – Mary Corliss, Time Magazine

“The most satisfying movie [Gilliam’s] made for years.” – Philip Kemp, Total Film

“Terry Gilliam’s ‘Zero Theorem’ proves to be fun,” – James Verniere, The Boston Herald

“It’s bonkers and brilliant, folding in pop culture icons with classical influences.” – Kristy Puchko, Cinema Blend
