(2013) dir Alexandre Aja w/Daniel Radcliffe, Juno Temple, Heather Graham, Kelli Garner, James Remar, David Morse [120 min; DCP]
Based on the novel by Joe Hill, HORNS follows Ig Perrish (Radcliffe), the number one suspect for the violent rape and murder of his girlfriend, Merrin (Temple). Hungover from a night of hard drinking, Ig awakens one morning to find horns starting to grow from his own head and soon realizes their power drives people to confess their sins and give in to their most secret impulses – an effective tool in his quest to discover the true circumstances of his late girlfriend’s tragedy and for exacting revenge on her killer.

Striking a delicate balance between dark humor, fantasy, mystery and horror, HORNS represents a continuation in Radcliffe’s departure from his Harry Potter days. His hard-drinking, confused and angry, Ig is pushed up against the wall and it’s largely through the strength of Radcliffe’s performance that the film succeeds. A key element to the film’s fairy-tale-like feel is the lush cinematography of Frederick Elmes (Blue Velvet, Night on Earth, Wild at Heart, The Ice Storm). Aja, generally known for more straight horror fare, shows real versatility with this team and has created his most appealing film to date.
