(1939) dir George Cukor w/Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Mary Boland, Paulette Goddard, Joan Fontaine, Hedda Hopper [133 min; 35mm]
From the salons of Manhattan to a ‘divorce ranch’ in Reno, THE WOMEN follows the romantically interwoven lives of a set of elite New York women. At the center is Mary (Shearer) a seemingly happily married woman who soon discovers that her husband is having an affair with a perfume counter chippy (Crawford). One of the cattiest, sharpest satires in film history made all the more terrific by the fact that not a single man appears on screen.
