The Razor’s Edge

(1984) dir John Byrum w/Bill Murray, Theresa Russell, Catherine Hicks, Denholm Elliott, James Keach, Peter Vaughn [128 min; 35mm]
THE RAZOR’S EDGE was the movie that almost broke Bill Murray. A passion project from day one, it was meant to be his break into doing more dramatic work. He made a deal with Columbia to finance the film if he appeared in GHOSTBUSTERS. He co-wrote the script with director John Byrum. He clearly poured his heart and soul into the project. But, ultimately, it just wasn’t appreciated. The film is an adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s post-WWI novel about one man’s search for a meaningful life after witnessing the horrors of war. Arriving on the heels of the success of GHOSTBUSTERS, it seemed audiences and critics alike just weren’t ready for Murray to play a more serious role. However, the fact remains that, as with most famous bombs, there is something to like about this film and it’s worth revisiting.
