(1981) dir John Boorman w/Nigel Terry, Nicol Williamson, Helen Mirren, Nicholas Clay, Cherie Lunghi, Paul Geoffrey, Robert Addie [140 min; DCP]
John Boorman’s vision of the Arthurian legend eschews noble heroism in favor of the realistic filth and violence of the Dark Ages. Simultaneously, however, Boorman seeks to further mythologize Arthur and his knights by making the film ageless and stateless. The result is a stunningly beautiful and intricately plotted film that hews close to the story at the heart of Malory’s Morte d’Arthur – that of king and country inextricably linked and constantly threatened by lust, jealousy, hatred, and revenge.
