HARPER

(1966) dir Jack Smight w/Paul Newman, Lauren Bacall, Julie Harris, Arthur Hill, Janet Leigh, Robert Wagner, Shelley Winters [121 min; 35mm]
Workaholic private detective Lew Harper (Newman) is hired by a wealthy woman (Bacall) to track down her missing husband whom she assumes will be found in a compromising position with some floozy. The case, however, is not as simple as it seems and Harper is lead into the sleazy, but still sunlit, underbelly of Los Angeles.

“Written in the tradition of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, HARPER puts a modern spin on the notions of tough dames, wise-cracking shamuses, and slimy con-men.” Kerry Fristoe writes about Paul Newman in HARPER for Brattle Film Notes. Read more →
