Repertory Series ArchiveIngmar Bergman's Fifties

Canceled: Sawdust and Tinsel

We regret that SAWDUST AND TINSEL is unavailable to play as scheduled. SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT will show in its place at 4:45, 7:00, and 9:15.

Sawdust and Tinsel / Gycklarnas afton (1953) dir Ingmar Bergman w/Ake Gronberg, Harriet Andersson [93 min; TBD; in Swedish with English subtitles]
Bergman presents the battle of the sexes as a ramshackle, grotesque carnival in SAWDUST & TINSEL, one of the late master’s most vivid early works. The story of the charged relationship between a turn-of-the-century traveling circus owner (Grönberg) and his performer girlfriend (Andersson), the film features dreamlike detours and twisted psychosexual power plays that presage the director’s SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT and THE SEVENTH SEAL, works that would soon change the landscape of art cinema forever. – The Criterion Collection
