REVENGE OF THE MEKONS

Director in Person Friday Night!

The Late Show: Area Premiere!

Friday, July 17 – Sunday, July 19 at 9:30

(2013) dir Joe Angio w/The Mekons, Fred Armisen, Mary Harron, Jonathan Franzen, Griel Marcus, Will Oldham [95 min; DCP]
REVENGE OF THE MEKONS charts the unlikely career of the genre-defying collective notorious for being—as rock critic Greil Marcus notes—“the band that took punk ideology most seriously.” Born out of the 1977 British punk scene, the Mekons progressed from a group of socialist art students with no musical skills to the prolific, raucous progeny of Hank Williams. Joe Angio’s exuberant documentary follows their improbable history – a surprising and influential embrace of folk and country music; forays into the art world; and consistent bad luck with major record labels. REVENGE OF THE MEKONS reveals how, four decades into an ever-evolving career, punk’s reigning contrarians continue to make bold, unpredictable music while staying true to the punk ethos.

(3½ of 4 stars) “Above all, the movie celebrates a band that half-heartedly tried to be rock stars and became people instead, singing people’s music with the fervor and affection of companions together as night gathers and closing time nears.” – Ty Burr, Boston Globe

“The Mekons represent every musically curious and adventurous group that matures without calcifying, or falling apart.” – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

“The film’s strength lies in just how far it’s willing to go-and to not go-in the pursuit of mythologizing its subject, a group of aging but unrepentant punks who treat the very idea of mythology like a bad joke.” – Jason Heller, AV Club

“What Angio captures, beautifully, is that the Mekons make great music because, together and apart, they’re so alive to the world around them.” – Stephanie Zacharek, Village Voice

“Adapting to the times, both in sensibility and in membership, the Mekons are depicted less as a band than as a democratic ideal – or perhaps an attitude, which the movie makes contagious.” – Ben Kenigsberg, New York Times
