Winter Sleep

(2014) dir Nuri Bilge Ceylan w/Haluk Bilginer, Meilsa Sözen, Demet Akbag [196 min; DCP]
Aydin, a former actor, runs a small hotel in central Anatolia with his young wife Nihal, with whom he has a stormy relationship, and his sister Necla, who is suffering from her recent divorce. In winter, as the snow begins to fall, the hotel turns into a shelter but also an inescapable place that fuels their animosities. In a change of pace for Ceylan, WINTER SLEEP is full of dialogue between this combative trio but the stark majesty of the Anatolian landscape in winter retains the visual power that he has been known for.

“★★★★!” – Peter Keough, The Boston Globe

“‘Winter’ feels very much like an epic novel, mirroring the pacing and themes of Chekov, whose work was its inspiration.” – Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

“Probably the finest (and paradoxically, least faithful) Chekhov adaptation on film.” – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

“Intimate, spectacular and masterful.” – Andrew O’Hehir,
