HEAVY TRAFFIC

(1973) dir Ralph Bakshi w/Joseph Kaufmann, Beverly Hope Atkinson, Frank DeKova, Terri Haven [77 min; 35mm]
Immediately following his breakthrough, X-rated hit Fritz the Cat, Ralph Bakshi created what is arguably his masterpiece, HEAVY TRAFFIC. The film centers on the fantastical inner-life of an aspiring cartoonist living in the seedy New York City of the 1970s. Frequently grotesque and offensive but just as frequently hilarious and insightful, and always unconcerned about hurting your feelings, Bakshi’s film truly is a work of cinematic art.

★★★★½ “A cruel, funny, heartbreaking love note to a city kept alive by its freaks, and always, always dying.” – Roger Greenspun, New York Times (August 9, 1973)

“It’s a downbeat, dark fantasia of urban life from a filmmaker trying to understand the darkness of the moment before it slipped away.” – Keith Phipps, The Dissolve

“Bakshi manages to offend nearly everyone from transvestites to mafiosi; but the comic distancing achieved by his army of animators manages to bring off a most difficult kind of humor: the humor of pain and despair.” – Don Druker, Chicago Reader

Reel Weird Brattle • Camp Sci-Fi CampOur run of THE QUAY BROTHERS IN 35MM inspired us to delve deeper into the dark, late-night side of animation, and we want to take you along for the journey. We start off with Linklater’s trippy 2006 feature A SCANNER DARKLY, before moving on to legendary Czech animator Jan Svankmajer’s ALICE. We’ll stop along the way to consider Fritz the Cat director Joseph Kaufmann’s 1973 follow up feature HEAVY TRAFFIC, René Laloux’s surreal masterpiece FANTASTIC PLANET, and contemporary fave Don Hertzfeldt’s 2012 feature, IT’S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY. We wrap up in late October with Mamoru Oshii’s highly acclaimed cyberpunk tale GHOST IN THE SHELL. Join us Saturdays at 11:30 for this exciting survey of really weird animation!
