UNDERWORLD

Live Musical Accompaniment by Jeff Rapsis

(1927) dir Josef von Sternberg w/George Bancroft, Evelyn Brent, Clive Brook [80 min; 35mm]
One of the things that most film noirs share is some kind of crime story or underworld element and so a clear precedent for the genre are the wildly popular gangster films of the 20s and 30s. One of the very first, UNDERWORLD tells a prototypical gangster story: a gang leader takes an intelligent but down-and-out lawyer under his wing who eventually becomes the brains of the operation.
