THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN

(1935) dir Josef von Sternberg w/Marlene Dietrich, Lionel Atwill, Cesar Romero, Edward Everett Horton [79 min; 35mm]
Von Sternberg’s last great film, THE DEVIL IS A WOMAN, casts Marlene Dietrich as a heartbreaker who comes between two friends during Carnaval in Spain. With Dietrich as a proto-femme fatale and a plot told largely in flashback, again Von Sternberg shows his hand as one of the grandfathers of film noir.
