SABOTAGE

(1936) dir Alfred Hitchcock w/Sylvia Sidney, Oscar Homolka, John Loder [76 min; 35mm]
In one of Hitchcock’s darkest films, Oscar Homolka plays Verloc, a down-on-his-luck London cinema owner coerced into committing acts of sabotage and Sylvia Sidney plays his unsuspecting wife. John Loder plays the charming grocer next door who turns out to be an undercover policeman keeping an eye on Verloc. At first the film seems like it might be a play on the comedic capers of The 39 Steps, but a grim turnabout occurs midway with the violent death of a sympathetic character – and the darkness grows deeper from there.
