YOU AND ME

(1938) dir Fritz Lang w/Sylvia Sidney, George Raft, Robert Cummings, Harry Carey [90 min; 35mm]
Before he made The Big Heat, The Woman at the Window, or Ministry of Fear, Fritz Lang made this unusual proto-noir. Sidney and Raft play a pair of ex-cons hired by department store owner Carey. The pair fall in love but their relationship is undone by lies and the temptation of another crime. Lang frequently digresses from the main action with abstract imagery and musical sequences composed by Kurt Weill (The Threepenny Opera).
