THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT

75th Anniversary!

(1940) dir Raoul Walsh w/George Raft, Humphrey Bogart, Ann Sheridan, Ida Lupino [95 min; 35mm]
Premiering just a month prior to The Stranger on the Third Floor, it’s possible that this trucker drama could really be the first film noir – if it was only just slightly more nihilistic… Brothers Joe (Raft) and Paul (Bogart) are truck drivers by trade who are close to owning their own outfit but, when Paul is sidetracked with an injury and Joe runs afoul of a spurned woman (Lupino), it seems like their luck is changing for the worse.
