HUMAN HIGHWAY

(1982) dir Neil Young, Dean Stockwell w/Young, Stockwell, Russ Tamblyn, Dennis Hopper, Charlotte Stewart, Sally Kirkland, Devo [80 min; DCP]
This goofy, post-apocalyptic musical comedy from the mind of Bernard Shakey (aka legendary rocker Neil Young) has been largely unseen since its original release. Now, finally available in a newly restored director’s cut, the film’s unusual charms and bizarre musical numbers can be enjoyed on the big screen once again. HUMAN HIGHWAY gives us a slice-of-weirdo-life look into the lives of the denizens of a broken-down desert diner/garage who carry on unaware that it’s the last day for Planet Earth.

“Young’s instincts as a musician and his instincts as a filmmaker dovetail in the way he shoots quickly and improvisationally, and then figures out later how to use it all.” – Noel Murray, The Dissolve
