THE MALTESE FALCON

Double Feature with THE BIG SLEEP

(1941) dir John Huston w/Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet, Elisha Cook Jr. [100 min; 35mm]
Despite doing more to define the style than many other authors, only two of Hammett’s crime tales were adapted into noir films during the 1940s. Of course, you can’t go wrong if one of your films helps to define the genre… MALTESE FALCON was the earliest title designated by the French as a film noir and its whipsmart dialogue, cynical outlook, and world-weary private eye all became tenants of the style.
