THIEVES' HIGHWAY

75 Years of Film Noir, Part 4: Prime Noir of the 1940s

Double Feature with THEY LIVE BY NIGHT

(1949) dir Jules Dassin w/Richard Conte, Valentina Cortese, Lee J. Cobb [94 min; DCP]
A pioneer of the on-location shooting that would become a hallmark of the 1950s film noirs, Jules Dassin directs this searing film about a trucker’s quest for revenge against the man responsible for crippling his father. Set, and shot, in the vibrant produce markets of San Francisco, THIEVES’ HIGHWAY is a three-fold experience: a thrilling melodrama, a social commentary from politically active Dassin, and a remarkable window into our nation’s past.
