Double Feature with THRONE OF BLOOD

(1964) dir Grigori Kozintsev w/Innokentiy Smoktunovskiy, Mikhail Nazanov, Elza Radzina [140 min; 35mm]
This stunning version of HAMLET from Russian director Grigori Kozintsev is based on Boris Pasternak’s translation of the play and features a score by Dmitri Shostakovich. Faced with the necessity to heavily edit a play that can run 4 hours in full text, Kozintsev intriguingly seeks to portray entire scenes using purely visual language.

“Kozintsev emphasizes the imprisoning moral architecture of Elsinore, not by obvious claustrophobic visuals, but by a rich, widescreen frame and purist, black-and-white imagery…” – Doug Cummings, FilmJourney

“A devastating, extraordinary achievement.” – Phil Hall, Film Threat
