(2015) dir Lucile Hadzihalilovic w/Max Brebant, Roxane Duran, Julie-Marie Pamentier [81 min; DCP]
This eerily seductive mind-bender is a dark, dreamlike descent into the depths of the unknown. Ten-year-old Nicolas (Brebant) lives in a remote seaside village populated only by boys his age and adult women. But when he makes a disturbing discovery beneath the ocean waves – a dead boy with a red starfish on his stomach – Nicolas begins to question everything about his existence. What are the half-remembered images he recalls, as if from another life? If the woman he lives with is not his mother, then who is she? And what awaits the boys when they are all suddenly confined to a hospital? The long-awaited new film from the acclaimed director of Innocence is awash in the haunting, otherworldly images of a nightmare.

“★★★★! Hadžihalilovic’s strong second feature is set in a closed-off world of medical horrors and unspoken social and sexual secrets: maybe the distant future, maybe another planet, maybe a dream, maybe just a metaphor, but one with its own logic that’s always one step ahead… Its post-human aspects are reminiscent of Under the Skin, its slowly teased mysteries recall Upstream Color, and its bold surprises are pure mindscrambling sci-fi.” – Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian

NYT Critics Pick NYT Critics’ Pick “It’s an impeccable, creepy and genuinely transporting movie.” – Glenny Kenny, New York Times

“To watch Hadzihalilovic’s films is to be reminded that life itself is a deeply perplexing mystery-that we’re all born into rigidly stratified societies, laden with inexplicable rules and run by people whose minds we can’t access.” – Mike D’Angelo, A.V. Club

“It’ll stick with you, and Hadihalilovic is in total command of her evolution.” – Kevin Harley, Total Film
