Double Feature with LUST FOR LIFE

(1952) dir Vincente Minelli w/Kirk Douglas, Lana Turner, Walter Pidgeon, Dick Powell, Gloria Grahame [118 min; 35mm]
Hollywood loves nothing more than to talk about itself – even when that talk is as caustic as the dialogue in this cynical drama about a Hollywood player (Douglas) and the people that he climbed on to get to the top. Douglas earned his second Oscar nomination but he was the only one of the 6 nominees not to win – we guess that he was just too good at playing the heel.

★★★★★ “Douglas gives a terrific study of male ego, all relaxed charm and going places.” – Cath Clarke, Time Out

“A fascinating study of a man destroyed by the 50s success ethic, left broke, alone, and slightly insane in the end.” – Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader
