Frances Marion was the first woman to win an Oscar outside of an acting category for the screenplay of this tough-as-nails prison drama. Baby-faced Robert Montgomery plays a newbie in an overcrowded prison who finds himself bunking with the sympathetic Morgan (Morris) and the menacing Butch (Beery).
