Double Feature with THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL

(1997) dir Robert Zemeckis w/Jodie Foster, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Skerritt [150 min; 35mm]
This adaptation of Carl Sagan’s novel features Jodie Foster as Dr. Ellie Arroway of the SETI program who is the first person on Earth to encounter a confirmed communication from outer space. Along with a team of scientists, and the backing of a secretive billionaire, Arroway uncovers that the transmission contains schematics for a mysterious machine that seems to be some kind of transport. A remarkable science fiction film firmly rooted in fact, CONTACT ultimately also becomes a fascinating collision of faith and science.

★★★★ “Watching the film again after 14 years, I was startled by how bold it is.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

“An exhilarating adventure.” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
