(2016) dir Lutz Gregor w/Fatoumata Diawara, Bassekou Kouyaté, Ahmed Ag Kaedi, Master Soumy [93 min; DCP]
Considered by many to be the birthplace of the Blues, the West African country of Mali has a rich musical tradition going back centuries that has given birth to many international stars. Yet today, the musicians of Mali are in grave danger. As fundamentalist Islam becomes more widespread in the country’s North, dance and secular music are prohibited, instruments are destroyed, and musicians are forced to flee their homes.

This vibrant documentary features four magnetic Malian artists: Fatoumata “Fatou” Diawara, a rising Afro-pop star; Bassekou Kouyaté, a celebrated ngoni player and traditional griot; Master Soumy, a young street rapper; and Ahmed Ag Kaedi, a Tuareg guitar virtuoso. Each combines rich musical traditions with contemporary influences, using their music to stand up to extremism and inspire tolerance and peace. The centerpiece of the film is Fatou’s performance at the Festival of the Niger in 2015 – her first ever in her homeland.

NYT Critics Pick NYT Critic’s Pick! “Despite the urgency of the situation the musicians face, when they’re not doing their work, the movie is quiet, observant, taking in the austere beauty of the land and the people.” – Glenn Kenny, The New York Times

“First-time feature director Gregor never imposes a narrative arc on his subjects; instead, we meet them, hear their hopes and their fears, and then savor performances of singular beauty, power, and invention.” – Alan Scherstuhl, Village Voice

“Compelling! Mali Blues artfully combines hypnotic music with definite social concerns. The emotion is strong, the music joyous.” – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
