Murrell (Mitchum) commands a destroyer escort patrolling the southern Atlantic during WWII. Murrell is forced into a battle of wits with the captain of German U-boat, von Stolberg (Jürgens). As the captains attempt to outsmart each other to win the battle, their respect for one another grows.
