Double Feature with THE ENEMY BELOW

(1945) dir William A. Wellman w/Mitchum, Burgess Meredith [108 min; 35mm]
Robert Mitchum’s big break-out role came in this based-in-fact tribute to the American infantryman of WWII. Lifted from the writing of Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent Ernie Pyle, THE STORY OF G.I. JOE features Burgess Meredith as Pyle and Mitchum as Lt. Bill Walker, the leader of a platoon that (fictional) Pyle joins as it travels to the front.
