Double Feature with MUR MURS (4:45, 8:30)

(1981) dir Varda w/Sabine Mamou, Mathieu Demy [65 min; DCP]
This small-scale fiction about a divorced mother and her child (played by Varda’s own son) leading a quiet existence on L.A.’s margins was made directly after MUR MURS, and though DOCUMENTEUR is different in form and tone from that film, the two are complexly interwoven, with overlapping images and ideas. This meditative portrait of urban isolation overflows with subtle visual poetry.

“Paradoxically, nowhere does the director seem more nakedly on display than in a film in which she doesn’t appear at all: Documenteur (1981), a wrenching fictionalized account of her temporary separation from her husband, Jacques Demy, which Varda punningly refers to as ‘an emotion picture.'” – Melissa Anderson, Village Voice

“It’s disarmingly modest and closely observed… A minimally plotted mood piece, it evokes Ms. Varda’s frustration at being unable to work on the movie she came to make.” – J. Hoberman, New York Times
