Elements of Cinema: The Young Girls of Rochefort

Free Screening – Passes Not Required

the young girls of rochefort

(1967) dir. Jacques Demy w/Catherine Deneuve, Françoise Dorléac, Jacques Perrin, Gene Kelly, Danielle Darrieux, Michel Piccoli [126 min; DCP]
After The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Jacques Demy followed up with a more effervescent confection about missed connections and second chances, that is THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT. Twins Delphine and Solange, a dance instructor and a music teacher (played by real-life sisters Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac), long for big-city life; when a fair comes through their quiet port town, so does the possibility of escape. With its jazzy Michel Legrand score, pastel paradise of costumes, and divine supporting cast, THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT is a tribute to Hollywood optimism from sixties French cinema’s preeminent dreamer.

“A musical boasting star power of the highest magnitude that satirizes the conventions of the movie musical with affection and wicked glee.” – Octavio Rosa, San Francisco Chronicle

“Deneuve and Dorléac are stylish, smart, and spirited, and their awkwardness as dancers makes them even more winning.” – Amy Taubin, Village Voice

This special free screening is a part of our Elements of Cinema series and will be followed by a discussion with the audience.
