Double Feature with STALKER

(1972) dir Andrei Tarkovsky w/Natalya Bondarchuk, Donatas Banionis, Jüri Järvet [166 min; DCP]
Ground control has been receiving mysterious transmissions from the three remaining residents of the Solaris space station. When cosmonaut and psychologist Kris Kelvin is dispatched to investigate, he experiences the same strange phenomena that afflict the Solaris crew, sending him on a voyage into the darkest recesses of his consciousness. With SOLARIS, the legendary Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky created a brilliantly original sci-fi epic that challenges our conceptions about love, truth, and humanity itself.

“There were images of startling beauty, then developments that questioned the fundamental being of the characters themselves, and finally an ending that teasingly suggested that everything in the film needed to be seen in a new light.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

“This mesmerising atmosphere-piece is superior to the Soderbergh remake.” – David Parkinson, Empire

“Tarkovsky’s eerie mystic parable is given substance by the filmmaker’s boldly original grasp of film language and the remarkable performances by all the principals.” – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader
