Born in Brooklyn to a Spanish immigrant father, Margarita Cansino grew up on the stage as a dancer on Broadway, before her father moved the family to Hollywood, and she began her film career.

In this, the first film featuring the famous detective Nero Wolfe, Rita (still credited as Cansino) appears as the client who puts the whole mystery in motion.
