(2017) dir Hirokazu Kore-eda w/Masaharu Fukuyama, Kôji Yakusho, Shinnosuke Mitsushima, Mikako Ichikawa [124 min; DCP]
Leading attorney Shigemori (Fukuyama) takes on the defense of murder-robbery suspect Misumi (the great character actor Kôji Yakusho) who served jail time for another murder 30 years ago. Shigemori’s chances of winning the case seem low – his client freely admits his guilt, despite facing the death penalty if he is convicted. As he digs deeper into the case, as he hears the testimonies of the victim’s family and Misumi himself, the once confident Shigemori begins to doubt whether his client is the murderer after all. Though his bread-and-butter is deeply-felt family drama (Still Walking, After the Storm), Japan’s acclaimed director Hirokazu Kore-eda here dips his toe into genre cinema with a courtroom procedural that verges on mystery – but remains rooted in the emotionally compelling stories that he is known for. Official Selection: Independent Film Festival Boston 2018

Staff Pick: Jessie

“With its echoes of ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ and ‘Rashomon,’ ‘The Third Murder’ is tantalizing, and in the end, the truth may be as hard to grasp as a snowflake.” – James Verniere, Boston Herald

“An intriguing and cerebral quasi-genre picture… a captivating puzzle.” – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

“For Kore-eda, an essential truth about life lies in the accumulation of unexplainable incidents and facts.” – Bilge Ebiri, Village Voice

“There’s plenty to chew on as Koreeda picks apart ideas of morality, law and justice.” – Tom Huddleston, Little White Lies

NYT Critic’s Pick “The back and forths between accused and lawyer are among the movie’s most enthralling scenes, largely because the soft-featured Mr. Yakusho – lips lightly curling – can make a nice smile seem positively terrifying.” – Manohla Dargis, New York Times
