(1966) dir Ingmar Bergman w/Bibi Andersson, Liv Ullmann [83 min; DCP]
By the mid-sixties, Ingmar Bergman had already conjured many of the cinema’s most unforgettable images. But with the radical PERSONA, this supreme cinematic artist attained new levels of visual poetry. In the first of a series of legendary performances for Bergman, Liv Ullmann plays a stage actor who has inexplicably gone mute; an equally mesmerizing Bibi Andersson is the garrulous young nurse caring for her in a remote island cottage. While isolated together there, the women perform a mysterious spiritual and emotional transference that would prove to be one of cinema’s most influential creations. Acted with astonishing nuance and shot in stark contrast and soft light by the great Sven Nykvist, PERSONA is a penetrating, dreamlike work of profound psychological depth. – Janus Films

The Brattle is thrilled to be kicking off a city-wide centennial celebration of the great film artist Ingmar Bergman with this run of one of his most influential and best-known works. The celebration continues at the Coolidge Corner Theatre and the Harvard Film Archive as well as with further screenings at the Brattle this fall. Liv Ullmann appears in person at the Coolidge on Sept 16 for a discussion following Autumn Sonata! For a full lineup of the screenings at all of the theaters in this program, please visit brattlefilm.org/bergman.

Staff Pick: Cardinal – been on my list for years, and I finally saw two months ago – an exploration of loneliness.

“This is the ultimate celluloid Rorschach test, where the production refuses to offer a straightforward solution to the maze of thorny challenges.” – Phil Hall, Film Threat

“Hardcore surrealism is rarely this enjoyable.” – David Jenkins, Little White Lies

“Bergman blends a theatrical subjectivity with a tactile visual intimacy, with his characters, the objects close at hand, and the superb coastal landscape.” – Richard Brody, New Yorker
