The Late Show: Theatrical Premiere Run!

Friday, December 7 – Sunday, December 9

(2017) dir Michael Matthews w/Vuyo Dabula, Zethu Dlomo, Kenneth Nkosi, Hamilton Dhlamini, Aubrey Poolo, Mduduzi Mabaso, Lizwi Vilakazi, Warren Masemola, Kenneth Fok, Dean Fourie [120 min; DCP]
This well-crafted homage to Sergio Leone takes place in just-barely-post-Apartheid South Africa where a shanty town has fallen under the thumb of a ruthless crime boss called “The Ghost.” Tau used to be known as “The Lion,” the bravest member of a crew of teenage freedom fighters named “the Five Fingers.” But then a violent action led him to flee his friends and his home, abandoning them to the consequences of his actions. Now, Tau has grown up and returns to his hometown to find it liberated but no freer – and he must try to put his fractured life back together long enough to take on a new threat and redeem himself.

FIVE FINGERS features a brooding, charismatic performance from Vuyo Dabula in the lead role. Meanwhile, Hamilton Dhlamini is a sheer delight as the growling, over-the-top bad guy whose gold wrapped teeth glint as he stretches out each line into a threat.

NYT Critic’s Pick “In stylish and entertaining fashion, ‘Five Fingers for Marseilles’ looks over the South African countryside and finds fresh vistas for the western genre.” – Teo Bugbee, New York Times

“If you are someone that is interested in high action dramas with steady pacing, gorgeous photography, consistent themes, and breakthrough performances then this is one film you do not want to miss.” – Jamie Broadnax, Black Girl Nerds

“[Five Fingers for Marseilles] is ripe with indignation, injustice, righteous violence and, ultimately, a shootout of cosmic resonance.” – John Anderson, Wall Street Journal
