RaritiesScreening on 35mmThe Good Works of Claire Denis (Part 1)Repertory Series

No Fear, No Die

1991 • dir Claire Denis w/Isaach de Bankolé, Alex Descas, Jean-Claude Brialy, Solveig Dommartin • 90 min • 35mm

In NO FEAR, NO DIE, Denis casts two of her favorite actors (Descas and de Bankolé) as a pair of black immigrant friends in France who raise and train roosters for an underground cockfighting ring. Unsurprisingly, the relationship between these two men and their business partner (Brialy) who runs the restaurant where the fights are held becomes a reflection of the contest within the ring as well as a microcosm of the larger world outside.

“As she did in the 1988 ‘Chocolat…’ Denis shows how the details of daily life carry the weight of a whole lifetime, even a culture. This film is exquisite in its own tough-minded way.”
– Caryn James, New York Times

“Many American crime films have used stories of suckers and getaways to take swipes at the American dream; No Fear, No Die is one of the best and most subtle examples of the French counterpart, aimed at the national motto of ‘liberté, égalité, fraternité.'”
– Ignatiy Vishnevetsky, AV Club
