| Brattle Theatre Presents Hal
Hartley in Person Stridently independent, Hal Hartley has been making films on his own terms and with his own circle of actors for over 15 years. Beginning in the early days of the 90s onslaught of "New American Independent Cinema," Hartley carved out a unique niche for himself. His homegrown (shot on his home turf of Long Island or New York City) and handcrafted (he is frequently writer, director, producer and composer) films are always humorous and always have something important to say about modern society. From the strange but inevitable love story of THE UNBELIEVABLE TRUTH to his current experiments in genre film (NO SUCH THING) to his tour-de-force, HENRY FOOL, Hartley's originality is always apparent and always welcome, especially in a world where it seems independent cinema has become just another commodity for major corporations to buy and sell. This brief overview of his films is merely a sampling of this great filmmaking talent.
Hal Hartley will join the audience for Q&A at the 7:15 screening on Friday, June 3. Tickets are $10.
