Dear Noir Fans

To all those who have commented on the issues during our summer Film Noir series – I offer my sincerest apologies and share your frustration. In an effort to make our summer classic film program truly special, I was apparently a bit too enthusiastic about screening rare and restored prints because there can frequently be issues with these kinds of screenings. Between last minute shipping and rights issues – and just plain bad luck – I admit the series was disappointing. But all of these issues came from various sources in an amazing confluence of problems.

On the other hand, and this is not an excuse but an effort to look on the bright side, we were able to screen some rare 35mm films that haven't shown at the Brattle in over 10 years – including SOMEWHERE IN THE NIGHT, BORN TO KILL, and WOMAN IN THE WINDOW. And even a few that haven't screened in over 20 years, if ever, JOHNNY EAGER, JOHNNY ANGEL and SLEEPING CITY!

Now, as I said, that doesn't outweigh the disappointment of missing out on the titles that were M.I.A.. I'm especially upset that we had to skip THE PROWLER and THE BIG COMBO (it was on the cover of the calendar for pete's sake!). As noted below, we are trying to reschedule these for October. They will not, however, be listed on the next calendar because they couldn't be confirmed as of press time.

Finally, I'm a huge fan of Film Noir. It is one of my favorite genres of film. Rest assured that you will be seeing (and I do mean actually seeing) many excellent films of this type at the Brattle in the very near future. I hope that we can make it up to those of you who are understandably upset about the "cursed" summer series. You can be sure that the "Noir 100" series will live in infamy here in our office.

Best wishes,
Ned Hinkle,
Creative Director,
Brattle Theatre
