GRETA
GARBO: A CENTENNIAL TRIBUTE
Mondays,
Tuesdays and Wednesdays in October
We
celebrate the centennial of one of Hollywood's most glamorous leading
ladies with this series of some of her greatest feats. Greta Garbo
was Marlene Dietrich's greatest rival for the title of Hollywood's
Nordic beauty queen. Both stars exuded sensuality with their sultry
voices and yet they maintained a haughty iciness that somehow only
managed to heighten their sex appeal. Both flirted with ambiguous
sexuality in their film roles (although Dietrich became more notorious
for it), both starred in quintessential '30s melodramas, both even
played the same infamous seductress/spy Mata Hari, but when it came
down to it, Dietrich got the sex and Garbo got the class. Garbo's
films remain elusive to those who are more susceptible to Dietrich's
obvious charms but, while Dietrich's films are fun for their flirting
with B-moviedom, Garbo's are by far the more High Hollywood. We
feature some of Garbo's classiest roles in this series including
two of her Oscar nominated performances (NINOTCHKA and CAMILLE)
as well as her defining films ANNA CHRISTIE and ANNA KARENINA. Join
us at the Brattle this fall for a celebration of one of Hollywood's
quintessentially glamorous stars!
